Fitness First and Instagram stars beat Blue Mondays

Blue Monday was set to be the most depressing day of the year – but Fitness First and Bradley Simmonds had other plans.

Apparently, the third Monday of January is the most depressing day of the year.

To put a positive spin on things and to encourage Britons to stick to their New Year’s resolutions, Fitness First re-named it Red Monday and let everyone into their gyms for free. Bradley Simmonds even joined in.

A spokesman said: ‘Just because it’s cold and dark outside, doesn’t mean you have to feel low!’

For the fourth year running, Fitness First combatted Blue Monday with this gesture – however this time we can enjoy the novelty indefinitely as they launched a brand new class promising to get you shredded as well.

Dubbed #SHRED, it’s a compound lifting and HIIT-based full body workout, and it’s the first time Fitness First has launched a brand new class in conjunction with Blue Monday promotions.

I went down to the 12.15 class at the Hammersmith branch of the health club, led by an Instagram fitness star and celebrity coach.

Bradley Simmonds guided us through the motions, keeping us motivated with encouragement and banter

The workout started with a warm-up using just a light barbell, followed by intervals of weighted exercises and blasts of HIIT for 45 minutes non-stop.

It was exhilarating and adrenaline-fuelled, and those of all levels could take part as the suggested weights were only a guideline.

Exclusive to Fitness First, the 40 minute class is based around five disciplines of athletic performance to ensure that calorie burn, bone and muscular strength and flexibility are all challenged.

The S stand for for speed, H for high-intensity, R for resistance, E for endurance and D for dynamic.

What more could you want from a full-body workout?! Except maybe a deep stretch the next day.

Luckily, Fitness First does yoga too.

SHRED is now available at Fitness First clubs nationwide.
