Why Kombucha Could be the Key to Healing Your Gut
Recently I was introduced to a new brand type of kombucha tea. I’m a well known health enthusiast so wanted to explore the benefits kombucha boasts. Little did I know just how effective it could be for my gut.
So, what is Kombucha?
Kombucha is a fermented, sparkling soft drink filled with beneficial bacteria for the gut. Many nutritionists claim that the gut is the key to good health. Within our gut there are trillions of strains of bacteria which are split up into good bacteria and bad bacteria, we all have a mix of both – even the healthiest of us, this is normal!
However, the issues with the bacteria in the gut come when the bad bacteria starts to outweigh the good. This can cause people to suffer with gut issues such as IBS, food intolerances, digestive disturbances, weaker immune systems and even skin issues. As I’m celiac I also have a weaker immune system so need to take extra care of my body, for years I suffered with eczema, bloating, psoriasis, acne, IBS and constant feelings of fatigue which was all due to my unhappy gut.
What causes the bad bacteria to take over?
Bad bacteria can take over due to anything from too much caffeine and alcohol to a poor diet or nutrition intake. A high exposure to food intolerances, not enough sleep and even too much exposure to stress.
As I looked into healing my gut I found out about the benefits of fermented foods and drinks. Fermentation is a process that normally turns sugar to alcohol using yeast. Fermented foods such as Kombucha tea contain healthy bacterias naturally which work at getting those essential nutrients such as vitamin K2 and probiotics back into the body.
As Kombucha is naturally high in antioxidants it aids the support of the immune system which can help you to effectively fight off viruses and diseases whilst working on healing your gut and replacing the bad bacteria with the good. Kombucha works at enhancing the absorption of minerals, particularly calcium, iron, zinc, magnesium, phosphorous and copper.
What does it taste like?
Kombucha is definitely an acquired taste, almost like a ‘gone off apple juice’ – according to my partner Josh, or a vingar-y taste (which I describe it as). I actually don’t mind the taste at all, or maybe it’s the fact that I know it is helping me feel healthier. Which I must say it really, really has made a difference, of course partnered with a healthy diet and lifestyle.
For those of you who HATE the thought of drinking anything unpleasant not to worry, The Kombucha Tea Co whose products I use, also have a pomegranate flavoured drink which has a much more fruity taste and will probably be your preferred flavour.
The Kombucha Tea Co drinks start at just £2.00
