Health and fitness tips: Keeping well in Sydney with a brand new routine

Health and fitness tips: Keeping well in Sydney

Since moving to Australia I’ve tapped into some health and fitness hacks which help me feel amazing!

You guys know Vicky and I are all about staying in shape and the latest trends in wellness. More specifically, we’re big advocates of heavy lifting, protein supplementation and indulging on refeeds.

However… Since moving to Australia I’ve become a bigger lover of cardio, I’ve started supplementing with more than just protein and eating in a more intuitively balanced way at all times – rather than counting macros then refeeding.

Here’s what I’ve been doing that I’ve found profoundly useful.

RUNNING

Last weekend I went for an amazing run called the Bay Run. It’s a famous route in Sydney round the Parramatta River, along a dedicated cycling and running trail built between the water and a row of houses.

There are a few outdoor gyms and benches along it and it’s a perfect weekend run distance of 12km door to door from my current place.

Readers may know I’m not usually cardio’s biggest fan, but I’m trying to do more day to day walking and running for heart & lung health. I ran more than 30 mins out of 100 (tracked with Samsung Health) and I’ll try to improve this ratio as the weeks go on!

I’m also walking loads more – averaging way more than 10,000 steps a day – as I explore Sydney and all it has to offer.

TAKING SUPPLEMENTS

I’ve been feeling so great recently despite getting less than my ideal 8-9 hours of sleep… and I’ve been taking a few new supplements which may have something to do with it.

Most people are deficient in magnesium, which helps you function better while awake and asleep. It helps with all kinds of processes including transmission of nerve impulses, body temperature regulation, detoxification, energy production, and the formation of healthy bones and teeth.

I’ve been taking this, as well as L-Carnitine to complement my workouts. This nutrient helps with fat metabolisation, making sure the body burns this for fuel instead of calories from the food you eat.

For a natural energy boost I’ve swapped out harsh caffeine drinks for Wellwoman Energy effervescent tablets dissolved in water. These contain L-Carnitine, Magnesium, Vitamin B12, Vitamin C, Thiamin (Vitamin B1 HCl), Zinc and more!

My go-to was a typical bodybuilding pre-workout drink during completion prep last year. And while there’s nothing like the caffeine kick it gives you, if you only take it once in a while, you can get aggressive, irritable, jittery, and feel pins and needles in your hands as side-effects. It’s not pretty. Wellwoman Energy is a gentler workout boost which you can take more regularly, and it’s good for you too.

All these supplements come from Vitabiotics, as I know they’re certified vegan and super high-quality & good value. They’re super safe & useful and pretty much everyone can benefit from taking them.

INTUITIVE EATING

What do I mean by this? Well I’m now eating according to what I fancy and what I believe my body wants and needs.

Sometimes I’ll have just a vegetable smoothie for dinner; while other times I’ll have two giant sandwiches and a curry (yes, really).

I know that’s hundreds of grams of carbs but you know what, shock horror, I haven’t become obese overnight. In fact, I’ve been slimming down!

NOT WEIGHING MYSELF!

I can only assume I’ve dropped a few pounds because my clothes fit me better and I look and feel slightly slimmer. I’m not going to weigh myself any more… Why do I need to decide how to feel about myself based on what some scales say?

I’m just going to carry on looking after myself, walking everywhere, lifting twice a week, eating whatever and whenever I feel like it while trying to consume heaps of vitamins and minerals from whole foods, and taking supplements for a healthy boost.
