Moroccan Hammam Day Spa: Feel like a queen with a royal treatment

I thought I knew what to expect when I visited the brand new Moroccan Hammam in Sydney, but this was a truly authentic royal treatment beyond anything I imagined.

Upon walking into the brand new Moroccan Hammam Day Spa in Parramatta, I witnessed the beautiful decor complete with mood lighting, rose petals and scents, and authentic interiors and furnishings all brought in from Marrakech.

The spa’s founder Leila and another lovely therapist, Amina, were very hospitable and by the end it felt like we were old friends.

To begin my treatment, Leila escorted me to a room where I could change and lock my stuff away.

I felt very at ease to walk around with just my bikini bottoms on in this strictly women-only spa. As Amina said: ‘We aren’t shy in Morocco’

When it comes to visiting a Hammam for a proper treatment, it’s very hands-on between client and therapist. After all, they need to scrub, polish and treat your whole body including you feet face and – yes – your torso, boobs and bum.

I walked in to the steam room Hammam room, it smelt lovely and had mood lighting.

Leila followed me in wearing a black cossie (this is a very watery process!) and sat me down on a wooden bench-bed covered in a waterproof Moroccan-print mat.

The first thing to go on my skin was a henna potion which is supposed to make skin smoother and easier to scrub. Everything at Moroccan Hammam Day Spa is entirely plant-based, organic and natural.

Then went on a silky brown soap called ‘sapun’ which allows the dead skin to scrub off even more. This has lovely top-quality extract of olive oil in it.

Leila then scrubbed me all over with exfoliating glove called a ‘kise’ (kiss-eh).

Then, she applied a clay mask all over my body (except the bikini bit, they don’t do there. Though they will thoroughly do your bum cheeks). The clay mask is super moisturising ad hydrating, containing rose water, petals, lavender and other Moroccan herbs.

I laid down then Leila applied a foot scrub on my feet containing coffee, argan oil and rose water. She put some cotton pads on my eyes, soaked in rose water, and applied a face mask made with clay, Moroccan oil and rose water.

I laid there as the masks worked their magic for 10 minutes before Leila came to get me up.

She sat me on a little stool (comfortable) as she applied a fresh-made avocado, organ oil and rose hair mask. I was getting the real top-of-the-range royal treatment and I felt like a total princess.

It gets even better.

Then, I got in a bath, in the same room, filled with warm water and secret bath lotion featuring real orange extract, oils and herbs. Leila gave me a fresh coconut to drink while I sat in there for about 10 minutes.

When I got out, I got back on the bench face down (I had a cushion for comfort) and Leila massaged me all over (especially on the back) using a handmade soap of 7 ‘sapuns’ which she makes herself. It’s a secret recipe but features argan oil, Moroccan herbs and lavender, which she says are good for cellulite and protecting the skin.

She then sat me on the stool and washed my hair, before leaving the room allowing me to wash my (small!) remaining area myself.

This is the kind of treatment brides get, or birthday girls. It’s a total top-of-the-range experience and it makes you feel like proper royalty. It is called the Royal Hammam Treatment… and guess what. It’s $170. Is it me or is that a steal?!

You can even get one done for $120 without the hair mask, bath, and using a different (black) soap at the end of the treatment.

After the whole thing is over, you can change in your very own private room then relax in the plush welcome lunge with girl friends sipping sweetened tea with baklava.

Bliss!
