At James's Place: The best vegan burger in Bundaberg
At James’s Place has long been hailed as the go-to spot for succulent burgers in Bundaberg.
It turns out that the well-known cafe, open for breakfast and lunch Monday to Saturday, is amazing for vegans and vegetarians too.
Having long searched for great restaurants in the area, I finally headed down to the cute diner opposite the Hinkler shopping centre to review it for myself.
A friend and I ordered an array of veg-friendly dishes after hearing many recommendations from other veggos in Bundy.
When it comes to my favourite dish, there’s one clear winner: the veganised mushroom burger, which is the veggie mushroom burger without cheese or mayo, and on a gluten-free bun instead of buttery brioche.
The bun was soaked with a homemade secret recipe Jack Daniel’s sauce – but it was still fluffy with a crispy crust
To make up for lack of cheese we got two of the chunky flat mushroom patties, which made it super ‘meaty’, while fresh tomato and red cabbage slaw added a nice salad crunch.
It came with tasty wedges on the side, along with tomato and BBQ sauce.
We also loved the smoky-style pan-fried mushrooms (in a little oil, in a cast iron skillet) which we had added on to the kale & spinach salad instead of chicken.
We added the delicious balsamic glaze on top which worked really well.
The pumpkin avocado salad was super-fresh, light and summery, and the balsamic berry sauce added a welcome tartness.
Pine nuts and cashews topped the salads off perfectly, adding some healthy oils and density.
We washed everything down with a soy milk strawberry milkshake (no ice-cream) and soy berry smoothie, which were both naturally sweet and bursting with flavour.
The friendly staff and top service topped off our experience, and we will definitely be back, especially for one more of those burgers… and to try the upcoming revamped breakfast menu.
Stay tuned!
