25 Nov The Alchemist’s new vegan menu
Theatre Served: Bubbling cocktails and a new vegan menu at The Alchemist
Bleeding burgers, chicken wings and banh mi… all VEGAN! It’s the newest venture from the coolest cocktail bar around.
The Alchemist is an experimental British bar & restaurant that makes you feel like you just stepped into Hogwarts for adults.
‘Masters in the dark arts of molecular mixology and demons in the kitchen’, bartenders possess powers to create bedazzling, bubbling, smoking drinks and cocktails, some presented in lab beakers or test tubes, which are sure to amaze you (and they taste delicious too).
Outstanding all-day dining is now a trademark of The Alchemist, and they’ve now launched the most impressive vegan menu that I couldn’t wait to try – including a disturbingly beefy burger…
The vegan menu selection was wide and varied with dishes that cross genres and cuisines to offer everything from Asian nibbles and buns to ample all-American mains, perfectly fit for a healthy & adventurous appetite. We didn’t know what to choose so went with recommendations from the lovely staff.
Walls adorned with weird, wonderful and distinctly ‘dark-arts’ decor provided a feast for the eyes while we waited, including stunning rustic light installations and psychedelic wall projections.
First we got out drinks, and while we went booze-free for the night our mocktails were incredibly impressive
We tried the Mango Shake (white chocolate cream foam, orange, apple, lemon, mango, passionfruit. Delicious.), the ‘recycled’ Elixir (pink grapefruit shrub, tonic made from leftover fruit. Botanical and refreshing.), and finally the Bubblygum (indeed very bubbly and tasted of bubblegum, as well as apple, cranberry & lime).
Once the food came, we couldn’t wait to get stuck in.
We tried the Padron Peppers to start, a classic tapas dish, along with the vegan Boneless Seitan Wings with BBQ sauce (you can also choose sriracha or salt & pepper. The wings were a hugely generous portion size and to be honest I could have simply had this as a main! They were delicious and filling.
We also got some Vegetable Gyozas which were full of flavour and I have to say my favourite dish of the night – alas a bit small with 4 pieces so we ordered a second portion.
For mains we shared the Vietnamese Banh Mi baguette with tofu, pickled veg & sriracha, and the Moving Mountains vegan burger (you have to ask for no mayo). The patty is 100% plant based, tastes bizarrely similar to beef and contains an amazing 20g protein.
With locations all over England including Leeds, Deansgate in Manchester (the original) and London, you’ll find an Alchemist near enough and if you love the theatrical and quirky like me, you simply must go.
